The Return of the Oilers
The Official Statement
The Houston Oilers were an American football team that played in Houston from its founding in 1960 to 1996. The Oilers began play as an expansion team in the original American Football League (AFL). After the merger of the AFL and the National Football League (NFL) in 1970, the Oilers joined the NFL as a member of the AFC Central Division.
The History of the Oilers
The Oilers were one of the most successful teams in the AFL, winning two championships in 1960 and 1961. After joining the NFL, the Oilers continued to be a competitive team, making the playoffs nine times in their first 25 seasons in the league. However, the Oilers never won an NFL championship.
In 1996, the Oilers moved to Tennessee and became the Tennessee Titans. The Titans have been a successful team in their own right, making the playoffs five times since their move to Tennessee. However, the Oilers remain a popular team in Houston, and there is still a strong desire to see the team return to the city.
The Future of the Oilers
In recent years, there have been several rumors that the Oilers could return to Houston. In 2013, the Oilers announced that they would be playing a preseason game in Houston in 2014. The game was a sellout, and it further fueled speculation that the Oilers could be planning a move back to Houston.
In 2015, the Oilers announced that they would be moving their training camp to Houston. The move was seen as another sign that the Oilers could be planning a return to Houston. However, the Oilers have not yet made any official announcement about a move back to Houston.
